Abstract
This research is an exploratory study on the predictors of depression improvement(DI), using KLoSA Wave 1 and Wave 2 data. A total of 3,257 individuals identified to have depression as of Wave 1 (i.e., who presented 16 points and over based on CESD depression measure at Wave 1) were included in the analysis. Dependent variable is DI(improved=1). Predictors include risk factors and protective factors identified as a significant predictors of depressive symptoms in the previous studies. Hierarchical logistic regression method was used for the analysis, putting sociodemographic variables, risk factors, protective factors, and interactions between risk and protective factors stepwise. Not gender but age, education, and income were significantly associated with DI. Having chronic illnesses was not related to DI, whereas subjective perceived health was significantly related to DI. The results of protective factors were quite different from the previous studies. Out of the 5 protective factors included in the analysis, periodical social gathering was the only significant predictor of DI. It is interesting to find that numbers of interaction terms between risk and protective factors were identified to be significantly associated with DI, indicating that the effects of risk factors on DI are likely to vary by the characteristics of protective factors. These results suggest that the predictors of DI maybe different from those of depressive symptom levels and that the effects of risk factors on DI tend to be moderated by protective factors. Based on the results, implications for DI were discussed.
